Welcome to the Adak Public School website. We invite you to browse around and see why we love to call Adak our home. Our school is located on the island of Adak, a part of an island group called the Andreanof Islands situated towards the western end of Alaska's Aleutian Islands. We are over 1200 miles southwest of the mainland of Alaska and our closest major city, Anchorage. Adak is the westernmost city in the whole United States. The Adak Public School is a part of the Aleutian Region School District; our sister schools include the Yakov Netsvetov School on the island of Atka, 90 miles east of us by boat and the Nikolski School on Umnak Island. Though separated by miles of sea, our sites share a rich cultural history of the Unangax (Aleut) people who for hundreds of years have and still do inhabit and hunt and fish these lands and waterways. It has been said that the "world" comes to Adak, some to visit, some to make a home and stay. Though there are less than 100 people who make Adak their year round home, the numbers swell season to season. Fishing fleets come to plow the waters for crab, halibut, cod, black cod and pollock. Workers come to process and prepare the catch for world markets. Hunters from all over the United States come for a chance at our trophy caribou. Foreign ships port with crews from varied Asian nations. Small sailing boats pass through in the summers. Researchers and scientists come from Japan, Russia and renowned universities in the United States for archeology digs, flora and fauna studies, and for earthquake and volcanic assessments. Visitors come from all contintents to enjoy the beauty of our island and the abundant bird and wildlife populations, and with the new military radar project in town, ranking Generals even come for visits. Our students are fortunate to be able to meet and interact with people from all parts of the globe and from all walks of life. Again, the students and staff of the Adak Public School welcome you to our website. As you can see, we are just beginning construction so please come back and visit us often to see what we have added for you to learn and enjoy! Thanks for visiting.
